Getting a Connecticut Home Ready for a New England Winter
A complete pre-winter preparation guide: heating, insulation, ice dams, frozen pipes, generators, snow contracts and what to do in an outage.
Connecticut winters do not usually break houses with extreme cold. They break them with repetition — freeze, thaw, freeze again, add wind off the Sound, add a wet snow followed by rain. The homes that come through fine are the ones prepared in October, and preparation is mostly a list rather than a skill.
Heating: service it before you need it
Have the heating system professionally serviced every year, ideally September or early October. For a boiler or furnace that means combustion testing, cleaning, checking the heat exchanger and verifying the safety controls. For a heat pump it means checking refrigerant charge and defrost operation. Change filters, and keep spares.
If you heat with oil, fill the tank early and consider an automatic-delivery or budget plan; the worst prices and the longest waits arrive during the first hard cold snap. If you heat with propane, the same applies. Check the tank gauge yourself monthly regardless of what plan you are on.
Bleed radiators, confirm every zone actually calls for heat, and walk the house to verify no vents or baseboards are blocked by furniture.
Stop the heat from leaving
Air sealing beats insulation for cost-effectiveness, and both beat turning the thermostat up.
- Caulk around window and door frames, and add or replace weatherstripping
- Seal the attic hatch, and check for gaps around plumbing stacks, chimneys and recessed lights
- Insulate the rim joist in the basement — a huge, commonly missed heat leak in older Connecticut houses
- Verify attic insulation depth; many houses built before the 1990s have half of what is now standard
- Close foundation vents in crawl spaces, and insulate exposed pipes and ducts in unheated areas
Connecticut has utility-sponsored home energy assessment programs that can identify and often subsidize much of this. It is worth an hour to look into before you pay full price.
Ice dams: the Connecticut classic
An ice dam forms when heat escaping into the attic melts snow at the top of the roof, the meltwater runs down to the cold eave, refreezes, and builds a ridge that backs water up under the shingles and into the ceiling. It is not a roofing defect. It is an insulation and ventilation defect that shows up as a roof leak.
Prevention, in order of effectiveness: seal air leaks into the attic, insulate the attic floor properly, and make sure soffit and ridge ventilation is unobstructed so the roof deck stays cold. Gutter cleaning helps. Heat cables are a bandage, not a cure.
During the winter, rake snow off the bottom three to six feet of the roof from the ground with a roof rake after heavy storms. Do not climb an icy roof, do not chip at ice, and do not let anyone use a pressure washer on your shingles.
Frozen pipes
Most burst pipes in Connecticut are in unheated spaces: crawl spaces, garages, exterior walls, and vacation houses left at 50°F.
- Drain and shut off exterior spigots; disconnect hoses; blow out irrigation lines
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas; use thermostatic heat tape where insulation is not enough
- On the coldest nights, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and let a trickle run
- Never set the thermostat below 55°F, even in an empty house
- Label the main shutoff and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is
If a pipe does freeze, shut off the main first, then thaw gently with a hair dryer or space heater — never an open flame.
Snow and ice management
Book a plow contract in September or October; the good operators fill their routes early and will not take new driveways in December. Decide in advance whether you want the walk and steps done too, since many contracts cover the driveway only.
Stock ice melt before the first storm and know which product you have: rock salt (sodium chloride) stops working near 15°F and damages concrete and plants; calcium chloride works colder; magnesium chloride is gentler on concrete and pets. Keep sand for traction on the coldest days. Mark the edges of the driveway with stakes so the plow does not take out your lawn.
Have a roof rake, a good shovel, a spare shear pin for the snowblower, and fuel stabilizer in the snowblower's gas.
Power outages
Connecticut loses power in winter storms, sometimes for days. Prepare for 72 hours without electricity:
- Flashlights and batteries, not candles
- Battery packs charged; a car charger for phones
- Water stored, especially if you are on a well — no power means no pump
- Food that needs no cooking; a manual can opener
- If you have a generator: test it monthly, store fuel safely, and never run it in a garage, basement or near a window. Generator carbon monoxide poisoning kills people in New England every winter.
- Working carbon monoxide alarms on every level — non-negotiable when combustion heating and generators are in play
- Know how to open the garage door manually
Two weeks before the first hard freeze
- Heating serviced, filters changed, fuel topped off
- Chimney swept if you burn wood
- Gutters cleaned after the last leaf drop
- Spigots drained, hoses in
- Snow contract signed, ice melt bought
- Detectors tested, batteries fresh
- Outage kit assembled, generator run for ten minutes
- Plumber, electrician and HVAC numbers saved in your phone
Nothing on that list takes long. Together they turn a Connecticut winter from a threat into an inconvenience.
